lyrics

It was a week before Christmas, but I didn't know that.
I grabbed my hat and coat, and stepped outside for a walk.
There's was fresh snow, but all I had were tennis shoes.
I thought I'd heard that Santa would be at the store down the street sometime soon,
But I couldn't find him. All the beards looked the same. Every dog on the street could've been a reindeer. I wandered until the snow soaked through my shoes and my toes were too cold to stay outside anymore.

Christmas aphasia
But I've got Christmas spirit
My brain can't recognize the sights
But I know when I hear it
The colored lights and Christmas trees
And snow falling around me
But I won't know it's Christmas
Til I hear the jingle-belling

There's something about Johnny Mathis, about the way his consonants are harsher than any crooner I've ever heard. For me, Christmas starts when I hear Johnny Mathis sing "ring ting ting-aling", like some sort of alien visitor. Sights and smells can be confusing, but there's nothing clearer than Johnny's voice.

Christmas aphasia
But I've got Christmas spirit
My brain can't recognize the sights
But I know when I hear it
Packages and mistletoe
And candy canes in cocoa
But I won't know it's Christmas
Until Santa says, "Ho Ho Ho"
